The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based private land-grant research university. Since its founding in 1861, MIT has contributed significantly to the advancement of several fields of contemporary science and technology.
MIT was established in response to the growing industrialization of the US and followed the model of the polytechnic universities in Europe, emphasising laboratory training in applied science and engineering. The other two private land-grant institutions in the US are Tuskegee University and Cornell University.
MIT is one of them. The institute’s urban campus, which is more than a mile (1.6 km) long and runs alongside the Charles River, includes a number of significant off-campus buildings, including the Bates Centre, the Haystack Observatory, and the MIT Lincoln Laboratory, as well as affiliated research facilities like the Broad and Whitehead Institutes.

MIT Scholarships
The MIT Scholarship is the most popular kind of financial help. If you get one, it’s a grant that you don’t have to pay back.
Our scholarships, which are funded by our endowment, contributions from MIT alumni and friends, and regular MIT money, are only given out based entirely on financial need. Most of our undergraduate students—about 58%—get MIT scholarships. During 2021–2022, the average MIT scholarship was $53,997.
Every student who completes the CSS Profile and applies for financial assistance is immediately eligible for an MIT Scholarship.
In order to match you with the appropriate scholarship from the appropriate donor, we will require you to complete an annual Student Information Review Form if you are given an MIT Scholarship. We may also urge you to write to your donor and express your gratitude for their generosity, since our scholarship donors are often curious to hear more about the scholarship winners.
First Year Grant
We provide low-income first-year students with a grant to help with the extra expenses that come with the transition to college, such as sheets and towels for your room, or a warm coat to make it through a Boston winter. The First Year Grant of $2,000 is divided equally between the fall and spring semesters and will credit to your student account along with other financial aid once you are registered for the semester. The grant is for first-year students only.
